Koshi Tappu Wildlife

Koshi  tappu wildlife Reserve  spreads  over  saptari  and sunsari  districts in East  Nepal  , define by the eastern and western   embankments  of the  koshi  River .The  vegetation of the  reserve  in mainly grassland with patches of  scrub and deciduous  forest s. what makes  the koshi  Tappu special  is that many birds seen  here  are  not found  in other  parts  of the Nepal . the reserve  has  recorded  around 439 species of the birds variety ,some  of which fly  all the way from Siberia  during  winter . A wide variety of the ducks, herons, storks, egrets ,ibis are seen on the &ampnbspriverbanks . Koshi  Tappu  Reserve  also has  one of the few elephant  stables of Asia. Other animals found here are wild buffalo, wild boar, hog deer, spotted deer , blue bull and jackal. Gharial crocodile and Gengetic dolphin are the other attraction in the  reserve . the best time  to visit Koshi Tappu  is between  October  and  march . Regular bus service are available  from  Kathmandu  and other major cities. The reserve can be accessed from Laukahi  on the Evast West  highway from where  the reserve  headquarters at  kusaha  is only three   kilometers  away. Another  option  is to fly  to  Biratnagar and then  drive to  Laukahi or  Parkeshpur .

How to get  there ?

 By Air :There  is  a  regular  flight  from  Kathmandu   to  Biratnagar  every  days. From  Biratnagar   a comfortable  one and half  an hours  drive  to the camp.

 By raft:An exciting 8-10days raft  tripe  on  Sun koshi  River  reaches directly  Koshi Tappu camp.

By surface: The scenic  drive  of  9-10 hrs  Through Nepal  country  side  by surface .

Morning / Evening Jungle walk

The jungle along the belts of the Koshi River is full of birds and other animal species. by the river lagoons and wetlands provides excellent opportunity to sight birdlife, deer and herds of water buffaloes.

Soft wildlife Rafting

Taking a raft down the Koshi river, is another alternative for exploring the reserve. Here, you can see the water birds daily chores like looking for food. The marsh muggers or the ghariyal crocodiles sun bathing but of course out of reach. You might be lucky enough the spot the rare wild buffaloes. Down the end, at the barrage, Gangetic river dolphins could be your best view of the day.

Village Walk

This is another interesting activity. Tharus, the early inhabitants of the region have their own unique way of living not affected by the western influence. Their beautifully decorated homes and their way of living can be an interesting part of the tour. The village is also plastic-free, one of the few environmentally aware and clean villages in the country. This initiative towards environmental awareness was taken by The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp itself.

Birds to see

Rarities include Greater Adjutant Stork, Red-necked Falcon, Indian Skimmer, Indian Courser, Bengal and Lesser Floricans, Hodgson’s Bushchat, amongst others.Spot-billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Black-necked Stork, Falcated Duck, Baer’s Pochard, Comb Duck, White-tailed Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Pied Harrier, Caspian Tern, Black-bellied Tern, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Swamp Francolin, Striated Grassbird, Bristled Grassbird.

 How to make your tours reach Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp

 If your tour includes rafting, flowing through the river to the camp, is one of the best experiences. Rafting down for 8-10 days on the wild stretches of the Sun Koshi River is another exciting way to reach the destination.

    The scenic drive through the meandering countryside road of about 500 km that takes almost 10 hours from Kathmandu.

    Koshi Tappu wildlife camp also makes an exciting alternative destination for visitors who have already visited Royal Chitwan National Park and Bardia National Park.

For mountaineers and trekkers heading towards or returning from Arun/Makalu and Kanchenjunga or any other eastern region, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve serves as ideal location to break the journey and have a brief relaxing stay amidst the greenery and comforts of the camp.

Fly to Biratnagar and drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.
